Social Networking

This was a smaller lecture by the university communication manager steve graves, who was previously a news editor for 3-4 years. He now organises the university Twitter and Facebook aswell as other forms of communications. This lecture primarily focused on the importance of networking and why you should do it, which throughout all of my lectures has been higlighted as of great importance. The lecture on networking began with the description of networking being a fun social tool that due to many factors evolved into something far more useful. It has provided a tool that means your not required to fully establish a website of your own. Networking is certainly the quickest way to reach millions of viewers. Twitter has accelerated this change and t has become a key tool in building a potential future. Having a website is a big part of setting up your individual creative identity.

so hows it useful to professionals?

Very useful in building up a brand from day one, and in order to actually get to the people who are interested in what you do quickly, although it is not soley a marketing tool.

 do's and dont's of networking
.Dont say your realy good all the time
.Continual selling of yourself, balance it with normal talk engage with people as well and keep it positive.
. Use Linkdin for being professional and use it like an online cv but separate your social and buisness accounts for all networking.

Social media can help your career and develop you work in any field but it can also be your career. Some companies now hire social media specialists specifically for this. Towards the end he narrowed down his advise into his concluding points such as being your self but your professional self, as well as identifying the tools that suit you. Finally he suggested to network with people find companies bodies to work for and artists you admire.

Review

This lecture was the most useful  for networking. up until this lecture the use of networking has been constantly mentionas something i should do. This lecture being fully based on networking had alot of time compared to the other lectures just to explain the do's and dont's on one specific area. With all the information I have from all lectures and primarily this one I now definetly know i will begin networking in the summer, slowly building myself into hopefully a web portfolio to get my work seen. This lectures large summary and breakdown of networking was the final push i needed to attempt to do so myself. The only problem with this lecture may have been that because i had heard it from almot all lectures there were many parts i had heard before but overall it was very informative and has started me on begininng to network for my own creative development.

how has it changed my views
All the lectureres have brought up the fact networking is of key importance if you trying to be within the creative industry, this has realy emphasised its importance and i will definetly try to establish my own networking. I now understand how i should act professionally yet not like always attempt to sell myself in order to make myself popular.

My own research

Linkedin seems to be the professional networking site that many of the lecturers such as chris woodroth actually use, so it would be good once i have built up a portfolio of work to start using this rather than facebook.

Of course there are the others such as Facebook and Deviantart but these weren't promoted as good networking for professionals, although a Twitter was also promoted as another networking site for you to both let people now how your work is, and where you are going, as well as to make contact with the designers that you like, it is the best way to apparently build yourself as a brand.
